Bass recordings 2009/1/24-25

We had reserved the whole weekend for the bass recording sessions, but we thought we should spare Janne's nerves and take Friday off. Any bozo can record a few basslines in two days without any problems. Fail.

An enigmatic strugle began even before the beginning of the actula recordings. We arrived at the studio at about two o'clock in the afternoon, and we found out that the studio had been taken over by some nasty hooligans. However they had a good reason for it as they had a diploma work to do which was a bit more important than our little production. Luckily there was another unreserved studio downstairs, into which we moved to make preparations.

It took a lot of time and effort to get the right sound for the bass. We tried out a plethora of pedals, such as Tech21 XXL, Tech21 Sansamp Bass Driver DI Programmable, Boss MT-2, boss HM-2, Ibanez CP-10, Boss NS-2 and BBE Sonic Stomp. In the end we decided to send the signal straight to amp through a BSS Audio active DI. So the final setup was like this: Schecter Hellraiser C-4, DI-box, Ampeg SVP-pro (Sonic Stomp and NS-2 in the effects loop), Phonic MAX 2500, Ampeg SVT-410HE miced with Sennheiser 602 and 421.

We began laying in the tracks around six o'clock in the evening. We worked only for a couple of hours. We were surprisingly efficient though as we got one and a half songs down and then decided to go home.

The next day we began much earlier and we were at studio before 10 am. I really can't remember when I last woke up before 9 am on a sunday morning. The early wake-up call was clearly audible in my playing and it took some time before my playing was smooth enough to really records some tracks. I had to redo some earlier things as the pickup balance on my bass had shifted to the neck pickup. In addition I had to learn some basslines anew as the guitar riffs differed from the ones I had learned earlier. There's a video on this below.

After some hard work we finally got down all the tracks. I must say that there's some heavy shit coming your way as soon as we get the vocal tracks done. May the Thrash be with you.

Koko viikonloppu oli varattuna bassojen nauhoituksia varten, mutta säästimme Jannen hermoja, pitämällä perjantain vapaata. Kyllähän bassot kahdessa päivässä aina nauhoittaa ilman ongelmia. Virhe.

Hirveä säätö alkoi tietenkin jo ennen nauhoitusten aloittamista. Saavuimme studiolle n. kahdelta iltapäivällä lauantaina ja selvisi, että studion olivat vallanneet jotkut epämääräiset rentut. Tosin näillä rentuilla oli opinnäytetyö alla, joka oli arvoasteikolla korkeammalla kuin meidän pikku tuotoksemme. Onneksi alakerrasta löytyi toinen studio, johon siirryimme tekemään valmisteluja.

Säätämistä ja soundin hakemista kesti jälleen oman aikansa. Kokeilimme monia eri pedaaleja kuten Tech21 XXL, Tech21 Sansamp Bass Driver DI Programmable, Boss MT-2, boss HM-2, Ibanez CP-10, Boss NS-2 ja BBE Sonic Stomp. Lopulta päädyimme kuitenkin vetämään soundin pelkän BSS Audion aktiivi DIn läpi vahvistimeen. Lopullinen setup oli siis tällainen: Schecter Hellraiser C-4, DI-box, Ampeg SVP-pro (efektiloopissa Sonic Stomp ja NS-2), Phonic MAX 2500, Ampeg SVT-410HE mikitettynä Sennheiser 602:lla ja 421:llä.

Nauhoittamisen aloitimme iltakuuden aikoihin ja jaksoimme vääntää vain pari tuntia, mutta silti yllättävän tehokkaasti. Ensimmäisen illan aikana ehdimme nauhoittamaan n. puolitoista biisiä ja päätimme lähteä kotiin.

Seuraavan päivän aloitimme huomattavasti aikaisemmin ja olimmekin studiolla jo ennen aamukymmentä. Milloinhan viimeksi olen herännyt sunnuntaina vapaaehtoisesti ennen kello yhdeksää. Aikainen herätys tuntui soitossa ja kesti aikansa ennen kuin soitto alkoi luistaa. Jouduin soittamaan aiempia otoksia uusiksi, koska basson mikkibalanssi oli siirtynyt etumikille. Lisäksi jouduin opiskelemaan pari riffiä uusiksi, koska muutama poikkesi aiemmin oppmistani. Tästä alla video.

Kovan työn jälkeen saimme raidat viimein purkitettua. Täytyy sanoa, että aika napakkaa tavaraa on tulossa jahka vielä saamme laulut nauhoitettua. Olkoon rässi kanssanne.

Guitar Recordings 2009/1/15-18

The rhythmguitars were layed down during the weekend. It wasn't easy. Finding the right sound lasted until the next day. There was a lot of tweaking and knob turning. We tried out a lot of gear such as, a 6505+ head, Marshall JMP-1 pre-amp, Boss MT-2, Boss HM-2, Behringer stomp-eq, Sonic Maximizer Stomp, Boss SD-1, Boss NS-2, boss DS-1, Marshall JCM 900 cab, Shure 57, 57beta and 58, Senheiser md421, and AKG 4000

We ended up using a pretty basic set-up anyway: Ohto's Amfisound Guitar, Peavey 6505+ head (crunch channel), JCM 900 cab, Boss SD-1, Boss NS-2, Sonic Maximizer Stomp. The microphones where Shure 57 and 58 in an arrow pattern. The clean signal from the guitar was recorded for later re-amping. We'll make some tracks with a different sound to add mass to the rhytm guitars.

As you can see from the photos, the legendary sock/hairband technique many used was replaced this time by toilet paper, and it works as well. The lead guitars will be done at later date. Next weekend we'll be doing the bass tracks.

Komppikitarat saatiin purkkiin viikonlopun aikana. Helppoa ei ollut. Säätämistä riitti soundien kanssa toisellekin päivällä. Kokeilussa oli mm. 6505+ nuppi, Marshall jmp-1 etunen, Boss MT-2, Boss HM-2, Behringer eq, Sonic Maximizer Stomp, Boss SD-1, Boss NS-2, boss DS-1, marsun JCM 900 kaappi, mikkeinä shuren 57 normi, beta ja 58, senheiser md421, akg 4000

Aika perussettiin kuitenkin loppujenlopuksi päädyttiin: Amfisoundin keppi, Peavey 6505+ nuppi(Crunch-kanava), Marsun JCM 900 kaappi, Boss SD-1, Boss NS-2, Sonic Maximizer Stomp, mikkeinä shuren 57 ja 58 nuolimuodossa. Puhdas signaali otettiin talteen myöhempää re-amppausta varten. Tehdään tuplausraitoja eri soundilla että saadaan vähän lisää massaa kitaroihin.

Kuten kuvistakin näkyy, monien käyttämän legendaarisen sukka/ponnarivirityksen virkaa hoiti tällä kertaa wc-paperi ja ihan yhtä hyvin toimikin. Liidikitarat tehdään kotona myöhemmin. Seuraavana viikonloppuna vuorossa basson äänitys.

Drums - Day 3 (2009/1/11)

Next up was the cover song which's name we won't reveal yet. It's still unclear will we get permission to release it. The drums are quite different from the original. We raised the tempo about 40 beats. It sound a bit like Slayer here and there, even it's not one of their songs. The track wasn't as easy as we thought in the beginning. Anyhow, the drums are now done and next up are the rythm guitars.

Sitten oli vuorossa coveribiisi jota ei vielä paljasteta. Saa nähdä saadaanko edes lupia julkasuun mut nauhoteltiin kuitenkin. Rumpuihin tuli aika paljon muutoksia alkuperäiseen nähden. Mm. tempoa nostettiin noin 40 pykälää. Paikoin kuulostaa jopa Slayeriltä mutta sitä se ei ole. Ei ollut tämäkään niin helppo veto mitä luultiin. Rummut siis purkissa ja seuraavana vuorossa komppikitarat.

Drums - Day 2 (2009/1/10)

We arrived at studio at 10:30 am. This time we were almost on schedule. We did some drum tuning and switched some microphones and were pretty satisfied with the sound. The mic list looks like this: Bass drum - Sennheiser E 602, Snare - sm57 and beta 57, Toms - Sennheiser md 421, hi-hat and ride - Neumann k 184, Overheads Röde NT5 - Ambience akg c4000.

Then we started to lay down the first song which as for now goes by the name "Diabolical Anthem" at a tempo of 227. This is our first song to include som blast beat, and I must say that it sound pretty furious. Toni got the song done quite fast considering the fact that we've only played that song at just a couple of rehearsals together. Then it was turn for the other original song, which is still unnamed and has such an embarrasing project name to say it out loud. There were more problems than expected but Toni nailed it anyhow. Around 7 pm we decided to leave the last track for tomorrow cause we were too tired to try it today.

Klo 10:30 saavuimme studiolle. Tällä kertaa olimme lähes aikataulussa. Rumpujen virittelyä ja mikkien vaihtamista jonka jälkeen totesimme että alkais olla soundi kohdallaan. Eli mikkikattaus oli seuraavanlainen: Basari: sennheiser E 602, Virveli: sm57,beta 57, Tomit: sennheiser md421, hihoissa ja ridessa neumann k 184, overheadit: röde nt5 ja ambiensseina akg c4000.

Sitten vaan ensimmäistä piisiä narulle joka ainakin tällä hetkellä kulkee nimellä "Diabolical anthem" ja tempolla 227. Bändin ensimmäinen blastbeatia sisältävä kappale ja täytyy sanoa että aika menevältähän tuo kuulostaa. Melko nopeasti Toni sai rummut narulle ottaen huomioon että parissa treeneissä ehdittiin tuota yhdessä veivata. Sitten oli vuorossa toinen oma biisi, vielä nimetön, projektinimeäkään ei kehtaa mainita. Ongelmia riitti sitten odotettua enemmän, mutta purkkiin kuitenkin meni ja klo19 paikkeilla päätimme väsymyksen takia jättää viimeisen biisin huomiselle.

Drums - Day 1 (2009/1/9)

Everythig started really swell fighting with our cars. We were lucky to find a another car to use and we left for the studio about an hour late, as usual. Once we reached Outokumpu the tedious task of setting up the drums, tuning them and placing the microphones began. There was a lot of problems with toms again. It felt like the right tuning and kick just wasn't there. We tried out a lot of microphones and felt like none worked. After long hours we decided to leave the rest of the microphone issues for tomorrow. Most of the drumkit sounded pretty good though. The bassdrum had a nice thick sound to it. Compared to Carrion, the sounds are quite different, which in my opinion isn't that bad at all.

Kaikkihan lähti oikeen mallikkaasti autojen kanssa tapellessa. Onneksi löytyi varalle menopeli ja matkaan päästiin tuttuun tapaan reilu tunti myöhässä. Outokumpuun päästyämme alkoi rumpujen kasaamaaminen, mikitys ja tuntienkausien viritys ja säätäminen. Tomien kanssa tuntui riittävän taas ongelmia, ei meinannut hyvää virettä eikä oikeanlaista potkua löytyä millään. Eri mikkejä siinä kokeiltiin ja todettiin ettei vaan toimi. Illalla pitkän taistelun jälkeen päätimme jatkaa säätämistä huomenna. Melko hyvältä kuulosti jo kuitenkin tässä vaiheessa. Ainakin basariin saatiin mukavan muhkea soundi. Levyyn verrattuna aika erilaista soundimailmaa tulossa mikä ei ainakaan minun mielestä ole lainkaan huono juttu.

Recording new material

ENGLISH

After a long quiet period will begin a new task. We have written and rewritten song for a while, perhaps too long even, and now is the time to reocrd some material with our new singer Tommi. The sessions are supposed to take place during nine days in the middle of nowhere, which is in the studio facilities of Outokumpu vocational school.

We're going to record three songs and the method of will be annouced later. We have our hopes high and are eager to see what will come of the sessions. It's going to be a challenging and nerve wrenckin project for many reason, but mainly because we're going to record, mix and produce the whole thing almost completely by ourselves. The reason for this is, that we wish to make the resulting product sound as much as possible like Discard sound in our minds. It won't be a total shot in the dark as we have some knowledge of recoding and mixing music. Luckily we're getting some help. Our style has evolved to be a bit rougher and more straighforward from the debut, but you can be sure it's no boring radiobullshit. Let the rebellion continue!

Elikkäs pitkän hiljaiselon jälkeen huomenna se alkas taas oma urakkansa. Biisejä väännelty ja käännelty oma aikansa, ehkä vähän liiankin pitkään ja nyt ois viimeinkin aika pistää uuttaa kamaa purkkiin ensimmäistä kertaa uuden laulajan, Tommi Rottenin kanssa. Koko äänityksen(lukuunottamatta laulut) on tarkotus tapahtua 9 päivässä out in the nowhere=Outokummun ammattiopiston studiotiloissa.

Eli kolme biisiä tarkoitus äänittää ja julkaisutavasta ilmoitamme myöhemmin. Odotukset on korkealla ja odotetaan innolla mitä saadaan aikaan. Haastava ja hermoja raastava projekti edessä monilta osin, mutta pääasiassa sen vuoksi, koska tuote on tarkoitus äänittää ,miksata, tuottaa jne. pääasiassa täysin omin voimin. Syy tähän on, että halutaan lopputuloksesta mahd. oman kuuloinen. Ihan kuutamolla tässä ei olla kuitenkaan lähdössä tekemään hommia sillä tietämystä äänityspuuhiin yms. löytyy omasta takaa. Mutta pientä apuakin on tulossa ja onneksi näin. Debyytin ajoista musatyyli on hivenen muuttunut rankempaan ja suorempaan meininkiin mutta mitään radiokamaa ei olla takomassa. Joten, Kapina siis jatkukoon!
